History

History of Neelum Valley

Neelum Valley has a long and rich historical background that dates back to ancient times. The region was historically part of the greater Kashmir area and has been influenced by various civilizations due to its strategic location along important mountain routes. One of the most significant historical sites in the valley is Sharda, which was once an important center of learning and culture.

The Sharda Peeth (ancient university ruins) in Sharda is believed to have been a major seat of education, philosophy, and religious studies between the 6th and 12th centuries. Scholars from different regions visited Sharda to study Sanskrit, literature, and philosophy, making Neelum Valley an important cultural and intellectual hub in ancient Kashmir.

During medieval times, the valley came under the influence of different local rulers and dynasties, and later became part of the broader Kashmir region. After the partition of the subcontinent in 1947, Neelum Valley became part of Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Pakistan. Since then, the area has gradually developed as a major tourist destination while preserving its natural beauty and cultural heritage.
